Biography

Amba appears in the <b>Mahabharata</b> as the eldest of the three princesses of Kashi. During her svayamvara, Bhishma defeated the assembled kings and carried Amba, Ambika and Ambalika to Hastinapura so they could marry King Vichitravirya. Amba revealed that she had already chosen King Salva in her heart. Bhishma honored her words and allowed her to leave. When Amba returned to Salva, he refused to accept her because she had been taken away by another warrior. Rejected by the man she loved and unable to marry Bhishma because of his vow of celibacy, she found herself abandoned by every path that had once been open to her. Seeking justice, she appealed to kings and sages before turning to Parashurama. Although Parashurama fought Bhishma on her behalf, the duel ended without a decisive result. Refusing to abandon her resolve, Amba undertook severe austerities to obtain divine aid. Pleased by her penance, Lord Shiva granted her the assurance that she would become the cause of Bhishma's death in a future birth. Unable to fulfill that destiny in her present life, Amba entered the fire and ended her earthly existence. She was later reborn as Shikhandi, the child of King Drupada. During the Kurukshetra War, Bhishma refused to fight Shikhandi because of the earlier birth as Amba. Using Shikhandi as a shield, Arjuna struck Bhishma down, fulfilling the destiny foretold by Shiva and completing the vow that had begun generations earlier.

Origin

According to the <b>Mahabharata</b>, Amba was born as the eldest princess of Kashi alongside Ambika and Ambalika. Her life changed when Bhishma carried the three sisters away from their svayamvara for the sake of Vichitravirya. After being rejected by both Salva and Bhishma, Amba devoted herself entirely to vengeance. Through intense penance she received Lord Shiva's blessing that she would be reborn as Shikhandi and become the instrument of Bhishma's fall.
