Ayodhya is where the Ramayana begins and ends. It is the city that watched a prince leave in exile, guarded his throne through Rama's Sandals and welcomed its rightful king home.

Biography

In the Valmiki Ramayana, Ayodhya is the magnificent capital of the kingdom of Kosala and the seat of the Ikshvaku dynasty. King Dasharatha rules the city with justice, and it is here that Rama, Bharata, Lakshmana and Shatrughna are born and raised. Ayodhya becomes the model of righteous kingship long before the exile begins. Preparations are made for Rama's coronation, but Queen Kaikeyi invokes the two boons once promised by Dasharatha. Rama accepts fourteen years of exile without hesitation, honoring his father's word. Sita and Lakshmana accompany him, while Ayodhya falls into grief after their departure. Dasharatha dies mourning the separation from his eldest son. When Bharata returns and learns the truth, he refuses to rule in Rama's place. Traveling to Chitrakuta, he begs Rama to return. Rama remains firm in his duty, giving Bharata his Sandals as the symbol of rightful authority. Bharata places Rama's Sandals upon the throne and governs only as Rama's representative until the exile ends. After Ravana's defeat, Rama returns to Ayodhya with Sita and Lakshmana. His coronation restores rightful rule to the kingdom, and Ayodhya becomes forever associated with the ideal of righteous governance remembered as Rama Rajya.
