Mahabharata SagaCharacter62.0

The noble king of Manipura and son of Arjuna and Chitrangada, Babruvahana inherited the valor of the Pandavas and the discipline of Manipura's royal house. He famously defeated Arjuna before restoring him to life with the aid of the Naga princess Ulupi.

Biography

Babruvahana appears in the Mahabharata as the son of Arjuna and Princess Chitrangada of Manipura. Because Chitrangada was the sole heir to her father's kingdom, Arjuna agreed that their son would remain in Manipura to inherit its throne. Raised away from the Pandavas, Babruvahana grew into a ruler known for justice, humility and exceptional martial skill. When Yudhishthira performed the Ashvamedha sacrifice after the Kurukshetra War, the sacrificial horse wandered into Manipura. Babruvahana respectfully welcomed Arjuna, but Arjuna reminded him that a kshatriya must challenge the guardian of the Ashvamedha horse rather than greet him peacefully. Bound by royal duty, Babruvahana accepted the challenge despite learning that his opponent was his own father. The duel between father and son became one of the most emotional episodes of the epic. Fighting with unmatched determination, Babruvahana defeated Arjuna in battle. The event fulfilled an earlier curse connected with Arjuna's slaying of Bhishma, a consequence that Ulupi had foreseen. After the battle, the Naga princess Ulupi revived Arjuna with the Nagamani, ending the curse and reuniting the family. Babruvahana's victory never became a tale of pride. Instead, it became a lasting example of duty performed without hatred, earning him recognition as one of the noblest warrior-kings of the Pandava lineage.

Origin

According to the Mahabharata, Babruvahana was born to Arjuna and Chitrangada during Arjuna's pilgrimage. As Chitrangada was the only heir of the Manipura kingdom, Babruvahana remained there to succeed his maternal grandfather as king. Raised in the traditions of Manipura while carrying the bloodline of the Pandavas, he combined disciplined kingship with remarkable skill in arms, eventually facing his own father during the Ashvamedha campaign.

Personality

Babruvahana was humble, disciplined and deeply devoted to dharma. He never sought glory through conflict, yet when duty demanded battle, he fought without hesitation and accepted victory with humility rather than pride. His loyalty to both family and kingdom defined every major choice of his life.
