Mahabharata SagaCharacter97.0

The elder brother of King Shantanu and one of the oldest Kuru monarchs, Bahlika was revered for his wisdom, discipline, and battlefield experience. Though advanced in age, he remained a formidable Maharathi and fought with honor for the Kauravas during the Kurukshetra War.

Biography

Bahlika was the elder brother of King Shantanu of the Kuru dynasty and one of the oldest royal figures still living during the Mahabharata. As the ruler of the kingdom of Bahlika, he belonged to the senior generation of the Kuru house, standing above even Bhishma in age. His long life earned him immense respect among kings, who regarded him as a seasoned statesman and veteran warrior. Although closely related to both the Pandavas and the Kauravas, Bahlika chose to fight for Duryodhana during the Kurukshetra War. His decision reflected his loyalty to the Kuru throne and the obligations of his position rather than personal hatred toward the Pandavas. Even in old age, he entered the battlefield as a Maharathi, proving that experience could rival youthful strength. Bahlika fought with remarkable composure throughout the war. He commanded troops with discipline, relied on tested battlefield judgment and demonstrated mastery of conventional weapons. Unlike many warriors driven by anger or vengeance, he remained measured and honorable in combat, embodying the ideals of an elder Kshatriya. On the battlefield, Bahlika ultimately met Bhima in combat. The duel ended with Bhima striking the aged king down with his mace. His death marked the passing of one of the final representatives of the oldest Kuru generation, a ruler remembered for steadfast duty rather than ambition.

Origin

Born into the Kuru dynasty, Bahlika was the eldest son of King Pratipa and the elder brother of Shantanu. Through succession, he became ruler of the kingdom of Bahlika while Shantanu inherited the Kuru throne at Hastinapura. His long reign established him as one of the most experienced monarchs of his era. By the time the Kurukshetra War began, Bahlika had witnessed generations of rulers rise and fall, making him both an elder statesman and a living link to the earliest days of the Kuru dynasty.

Personality

Bahlika was calm, disciplined and deeply committed to royal duty. He valued honor above victory and loyalty above personal comfort. Though he recognized the tragedy of the coming war, he fulfilled what he believed to be his obligation as an elder of the Kuru house, facing death with dignity instead of withdrawing from battle.
