Mahabharata SagaCharacter107.0

The thousand-armed Asura king of Sonitapura and a devoted follower of Lord Shiva, Bana possessed extraordinary strength and divine weapons. His conflict with Lord Krishna over Aniruddha and Usha became one of the greatest battles of the Yadava era, ending with Shiva himself intervening.

Biography

Banasura, often called Bana, was the mighty Asura king of Sonitapura and the eldest son of the celebrated Daitya king Bali. Though born among the Asuras, he earned immense favor through unwavering devotion to Lord Shiva. Pleased with his austerities, Shiva accepted Bana as a devotee and granted him protection, while Bana's thousand arms became the symbol of his immense strength and unmatched confidence. Over time, Bana's extraordinary power became a source of frustration rather than fulfillment. Finding no worthy opponent, he asked Shiva for a battle that would satisfy his warrior spirit. Shiva foretold that the day Bana's banner fell, a great conflict would arrive. That prophecy came to pass through the unexpected love between Bana's daughter Usha and Aniruddha, the grandson of Krishna. When Aniruddha was secretly brought to Sonitapura by Usha's companion Chitralekha, Bana discovered the young Yadava prince and imprisoned him. Krishna, Balarama, and the Yadava army marched to rescue Aniruddha, leading to one of the greatest battles described in the Bhagavata Purana and the Harivamsha. Shiva himself entered the battlefield to defend his devotee, while Krishna confronted him without diminishing the mutual reverence between the two deities. The battle ended when Krishna defeated Bana by severing all but four of his thousand arms with the Sudarshana Chakra. At Shiva's request, Krishna spared Bana's life, honoring both Shiva's devotion to his follower and Bana's lineage as the son of Bali. Humbled by defeat, Bana accepted Krishna's mercy and allowed the marriage of Usha and Aniruddha, bringing the conflict to a peaceful conclusion.

Origin

Banasura was born to the righteous Daitya king Bali and inherited the throne of Sonitapura. Through severe penance and steadfast devotion, he won the favor of Lord Shiva, who blessed him and became his divine protector. His unmatched strength and thousand arms made him nearly invincible, yet pride gradually overshadowed wisdom. The prophecy surrounding his royal banner eventually drew him into the conflict that fulfilled Shiva's own prediction.

Personality

Bana is fearless, proud, and fiercely loyal. His devotion to Shiva is absolute, yet his confidence often becomes arrogance. He is a capable ruler and loving father, but his determination to protect his honor leads him into a war that ultimately teaches humility through divine mercy.
