Biography

Bhagadatta appears in the Mahabharata as the aged yet formidable king of Pragjyotisha. The son of Narakasura according to the epic tradition, he maintained friendly relations with the Pandavas before the Kurukshetra War. Despite this respect, he chose to fight for the Kauravas out of loyalty to longstanding political alliances and his duty as a king. Among all the warriors of Kurukshetra, Bhagadatta was unmatched in elephant warfare. Riding his colossal elephant Supratika, he repeatedly shattered battle formations and scattered seasoned warriors. Even Bhima and other great heroes struggled against the devastating charge of the massive elephant, making Bhagadatta one of the most feared commanders on the battlefield. During the later stages of the war, Bhagadatta confronted Arjuna in one of the greatest elephant duels described in the epic. In the heat of battle, he invoked the Vaishnavastra, a celestial weapon of immense power. Krishna, serving as Arjuna's charioteer, intercepted the weapon upon his own chest, where it transformed into a garland instead of harming Arjuna. After the Vaishnavastra had been rendered ineffective, Arjuna continued the battle and slew both Supratika and Bhagadatta with his arrows. His fall marked the end of one of the oldest and most experienced Maharathis fighting on the Kaurava side, leaving behind a legacy defined by courage, mastery of elephant warfare and unwavering loyalty to his chosen cause.
