Mahabharata SagaCharacter44.0

Son of Somadatta and one of the greatest Kuru Maharathis, Bhurishrava was famed for his mastery of archery and close combat. His fierce rivalry with Satyaki culminated in one of the most dramatic duels of the Kurukshetra War.

Biography

Bhurishrava appears in the Mahabharata as the son of Somadatta and a distinguished prince of the Kuru lineage. Celebrated as a maharathi, he earned renown through mastery of archery, swordsmanship and hand-to-hand combat. When the Kurukshetra War began, he stood firmly with the Kauravas and became one of their foremost battlefield commanders. His rivalry with Satyaki stretched back to an earlier feud between their families. Somadatta had once been defeated and humiliated by Sini, an ancestor of Satyaki, during a contest connected with Devaki. That old resentment lived on into the next generation, and Bhurishrava sought to restore his family's honor when he met Satyaki in battle. On the fourteenth day of the war, the two warriors fought a long and exhausting duel. Bhurishrava gained the upper hand after Satyaki, already weakened from earlier combat, collapsed on the battlefield. As Bhurishrava prepared to kill the defenseless Satyaki, Arjuna intervened and severed Bhurishrava's arm with an arrow to save his ally. Bhurishrava accepted that he could no longer continue as a warrior. Sitting upon the battlefield in meditation, he prepared for death. Before his meditation was complete, Satyaki rose and struck off Bhurishrava's head. The episode became one of the most debated moments of the Mahabharata, with warriors on both sides arguing over the conduct of each participant.

Origin

According to the Mahabharata, Bhurishrava was born to Somadatta of the Kuru line. Raised among the foremost Kuru warriors, he mastered every major form of martial combat and earned recognition as one of the greatest maharathis of his generation. The long-standing rivalry between his family and the descendants of Sini shaped much of his destiny. That inherited feud ultimately reached its climax in his fatal duel with Satyaki during the Kurukshetra War.

Personality

Bhurishrava is remembered as disciplined, courageous and deeply conscious of family honor. He fought with unwavering commitment to the Kaurava cause, yet his final moments showed remarkable composure as he accepted death through meditation rather than despair. His story reflects both the nobility and the tragedy of inherited rivalries.
