Mahabharata SagaCharacter34.0

The warrior princess of Manipura and wife of Arjuna, Chitrangada was raised as the heir to her kingdom and trained in martial arts from childhood. Brave, noble, and devoted to her people, she became the mother of Babruvahana, ensuring the continuation of the Manipura royal lineage.

Biography

Chitrangada appears in the Mahabharata as the daughter of King Chitravahana of Manipura. Because the royal line had received a boon that each generation would have only one child, Chitravahana raised his daughter as the heir to the throne. She was trained in warfare, governance and the duties of a ruler, preparing her to protect her kingdom. During Arjuna's exile, he journeyed to Manipura and met Chitrangada. Impressed by her courage and noble character, he sought her hand in marriage. King Chitravahana agreed on the condition that any son born from the union would remain in Manipura to continue the royal lineage. Arjuna accepted, and the two were married. Chitrangada gave birth to Babruvahana, who inherited the throne of Manipura. After spending time with his wife and son, Arjuna resumed his pilgrimage, leaving Babruvahana to be raised under Chitrangada's care. She guided both the kingdom and its future king, preserving the succession promised to her father. Years later, during Yudhishthira's Ashvamedha sacrifice, Babruvahana unknowingly fought and defeated Arjuna. Chitrangada witnessed the conflict between father and son. After Arjuna was restored to life through the intervention of Ulupi and the Nagamani, the family was reunited. Chitrangada remained a symbol of royal duty, courage and unwavering devotion to Manipura.

Origin

According to the Mahabharata, Chitrangada was born as the only child of King Chitravahana of Manipura. Because of a family boon limiting each generation to a single heir, she was raised not merely as a princess but as the future ruler of the kingdom. Her Royal Heir of Manipura shaped every aspect of her life. Through her marriage to Arjuna and the birth of Babruvahana, she preserved both her father's lineage and the throne of Manipura.

Personality

Chitrangada is remembered as courageous, dutiful and compassionate. She balanced the responsibilities of a warrior, a queen and a mother without abandoning any of them. Her loyalty to her kingdom remained constant, even when it meant living apart from Arjuna so that the royal lineage of Manipura could continue.
