Biography

In the Valmiki Ramayana, Dasharatha is the mighty emperor of Ayodhya and the ruler of the Ikshvaku dynasty. Renowned for his military strength, wise governance and mastery as a chariot warrior, he protects his kingdom through courage and discipline. His authority rests not only on power but also on his unwavering commitment to truth and righteous rule. For many years, Dasharatha remains without an heir. Seeking the continuation of his dynasty, he performs the Putrakameshti sacrifice under the guidance of Sage Rishyasringa. The sacred rite leads to the births of Rama, Bharata, Lakshmana and Shatrughna, bringing renewed hope to Ayodhya. Earlier in his reign, Kaikeyi saves Dasharatha's life during a great battle. In gratitude, he grants her Two Sacred Boons to be claimed whenever she desires. When she later demands Bharata's coronation and Rama's exile, Dasharatha is shattered. Though every instinct urges him to refuse, he remains bound by the promise he had freely given. His devotion to truth outweighs even his love for Rama. Unable to bear the pain of separation from his eldest son, Dasharatha spends his final days consumed by grief. He recalls an earlier mistake from his youth, when he accidentally killed the ascetic youth Shravana while hunting by sound. The curse spoken by Shravana's parents foretells that Dasharatha too would one day die in unbearable sorrow caused by separation from his son. Dasharatha's life becomes one of the Ramayana's greatest lessons in kingship. He is remembered as a warrior without equal, a father devoted beyond measure and a ruler who chose to uphold his word even when it destroyed his own happiness.

Origin

From that moment, both the future of his dynasty and the destiny of the Ramayana are set into motion.
