Biography

Devaki appears in the Mahabharata and is described in greater detail in the Harivamsha, Bhagavata Purana and Vishnu Purana as the daughter of Devaka and the wife of Vasudeva. On the day of her wedding, her cousin Kamsa heard a prophecy that her eighth son would one day cause his death. Fear immediately turned into tyranny. Kamsa imprisoned Devaki and Vasudeva inside the royal prison of Mathura. One by one, Devaki's first six sons were slain by Kamsa shortly after birth. According to the Puranic tradition, the seventh embryo was divinely transferred to Rohini through Yogamaya, where he was born as Balarama. When Krishna was born as Devaki's eighth child, the prison was filled with divine radiance. By divine will, the prison doors opened, the guards fell asleep and Vasudeva carried the infant safely across the Yamuna to Gokula. Devaki remained behind, trusting completely in the divine plan despite years of grief and suffering. After Krishna slew Kamsa, Devaki and Vasudeva were finally released from imprisonment. Her story became one of the greatest examples of unwavering faith in the face of unimaginable loss. She is remembered not for wielding weapons, but for preserving hope until dharma returned to the world.
