Devantaka

Devantaka appears in the <i>Valmiki Ramayana</i> as one of Ravana's sons and among the formidable Rakshasa princes who entered the battlefield after many of Lanka's greatest warriors had already fallen. He was renowned for overwhelming physical strength and devastating mastery of the mace, making him one of the kingdom's most dangerous close-combat fighters. When Devantaka joined the war, he charged directly into the Vanara ranks with relentless force. Unlike archers who struck from afar, he relied upon crushing power, breaking enemy formations through direct assault. His fearless advance spread panic across the battlefield and demonstrated why Ravana continued to trust the strength of his royal house. The destruction caused by Devantaka drew the attention of Hanuman. Their encounter became a contest of raw power between two warriors celebrated for unmatched physical might. Devantaka fought fiercely with his mace, refusing to retreat despite Hanuman's overwhelming resilience. The duel ended when Hanuman struck Devantaka down with a tremendous blow, bringing an end to one of Ravana's strongest sons. His death weakened the remaining strength of Lanka's royal warriors and marked another decisive shift in the final stages of the war.
