The Blind King

Dhritarashtra

Dhritarashtra · Kuru King · Son of Vichitravirya · Father of the Kauravas

Mahabharata SagaCharacter15.0

Born to Sage Vyasa and Queen Ambika, Dhritarashtra was the blind king of Hastinapura and father of the hundred Kauravas. Though blessed with immense physical strength and profound knowledge of statecraft, his deep attachment to his son Duryodhana often clouded his judgment. His inability to uphold justice at crucial moments became one of the principal causes of the Kurukshetra War, making him one of the most tragic rulers in the Mahabharata.

Biography

Dhritarashtra was born through the niyoga tradition to Sage Vyasa and Ambika, the widow of Vichitravirya. He was born blind, and this physical condition shaped the succession question within the Kuru dynasty. His younger brother Pandu eventually became king, while Dhritarashtra remained closely connected to the affairs of Hastinapura. Dhritarashtra later became king of Hastinapura and fathered the Kaurava princes with Gandhari. He possessed great physical strength despite his blindness and was deeply concerned with the security and future of his dynasty. His position demanded judgment, but his attachment to his sons repeatedly made that judgment difficult. The rivalry between his sons and the Pandavas placed Dhritarashtra in an increasingly painful position. He knew that the conflict was dangerous, yet he repeatedly failed to restrain Duryodhana and the forces around him. His weakness was not ignorance of the stakes. It was his inability to place justice above attachment when the moment demanded it. During the dice game and the events that followed, Dhritarashtra occupied the throne while the Kuru court moved toward catastrophe. He eventually intervened to restore what had been lost, but the conflict returned and the Pandavas were driven into exile. His decisions repeatedly delayed the crisis rather than resolving its cause. When the Kurukshetra War came, Dhritarashtra remained in Hastinapura. Through Sanjaya, who was granted extraordinary sight, he received an account of the battlefield and its destruction. Each report brought the deaths of members of his family closer, turning the distant war into a personal catastrophe. After the war, Dhritarashtra lived with the consequences of the destruction of his dynasty. He eventually withdrew from royal life with Gandhari and Kunti and entered the forest. His final years were marked by austerity and detachment, bringing his long story from royal power toward renunciation.

Origin

Dhritarashtra was born to Sage Vyasa and Ambika within the succession crisis of the Kuru royal house. The Mahabharata describes him as being born blind, while his younger brother Pandu was able to assume the throne. His blindness did not remove him from royal life. He became deeply involved in the governance of Hastinapura and ultimately ruled as its king. His marriage to Gandhari and the birth of the Kaurava princes tied his personal attachments directly to the political struggle that would consume the Kuru dynasty.

Personality

Dhritarashtra is deeply conflicted. He understands politics, values the Kuru kingdom and possesses formidable physical power, yet his love for Duryodhana repeatedly overcomes his better judgment. He can recognize danger and still hesitate to act. His blindness is physical, but the epic also gives his story a moral dimension: at crucial moments, attachment prevents him from seeing and acting upon what justice requires.
