Dhumraksha

Dhumraksha appears in the <i>Valmiki Ramayana</i> as one of Ravana's prominent military commanders during the war for Lanka. Following setbacks suffered by the Rakshasa forces, Ravana dispatched him with a large army to halt the advance of Rama's allies. Known for his aggression and battlefield discipline, Dhumraksha answered the command without hesitation. Marching from Lanka with chariots, warriors and formidable weapons, Dhumraksha launched a fierce assault against the Vanara army. His attack caused heavy fighting across the battlefield as he cut through opposing forces with relentless determination. He relied upon strength, martial skill and the confidence of an experienced commander rather than deception or sorcery. Hanuman met Dhumraksha in direct combat. Their clash became one of the memorable duels of the campaign. Despite Dhumraksha's ferocity and powerful weapons, Hanuman ultimately overwhelmed him. The Vanara hero struck him down with overwhelming force, ending both the general's command and his part in the war. The death of Dhumraksha further weakened Ravana's military leadership. His defeat demonstrated that even Lanka's strongest commanders could not withstand the determination of Rama's allies when fighting for Dharma.

The <i>Valmiki Ramayana</i> introduces Dhumraksha as one of Ravana's trusted Rakshasa generals during the Lanka war. The epic emphasizes his importance as a battlefield commander rather than providing an extended account of his ancestry or earlier life. Entrusted with leading Rakshasa forces against the Vanara army, Dhumraksha fulfilled his duty with complete loyalty until he was slain by Hanuman in open combat.
