Dushana

Dushana appears in the <i>Valmiki Ramayana</i> as the principal commander of Khara's Rakshasa army at Janasthana. Entrusted with leading one of the strongest military forces in Dandaka Forest, he commanded seasoned Rakshasa warriors whose duty was to dominate the region and crush anyone who challenged their rule. His reputation rested on relentless aggression and unquestioned loyalty to Khara. After Surpanakha reported her humiliation at Panchavati, Khara resolved to destroy Rama. Dushana answered the command without hesitation, assembling the Rakshasa host and leading it into battle. He fought not as a reckless berserker but as a battlefield commander who coordinated assaults while personally engaging the enemy. The battle quickly revealed the difference between earthly strength and divine purpose. Dushana attacked Rama with powerful weapons and unyielding determination, yet Rama's celestial arrows shattered his chariot, destroyed his weapons and ultimately struck him down. His defeat weakened the command structure of Janasthana before Khara himself entered the battlefield. The death of Dushana marked more than the fall of a general. It signaled the collapse of Rakshasa power in Janasthana and foreshadowed the greater destruction that would later consume Lanka. His courage could not overcome a battle fought against the defender of dharma.

The <i>Valmiki Ramayana</i> identifies Dushana as the chief general serving under Khara at Janasthana. As one of the foremost Rakshasa commanders in Dandaka Forest, he was entrusted with defending the region and leading its warriors into battle. His loyalty to Khara and devotion to Rakshasa power defined his life. That loyalty ultimately led him to confront Rama during the battle that shattered Janasthana's military strength.

Dushana is fearless, disciplined and unwavering in his allegiance to Khara. He embraces conflict without hesitation and believes overwhelming force is the answer to every challenge. Though brave in battle, his devotion to violence blinds him to the moral consequences of the cause he serves.
