A renowned northwestern kingdom celebrated for its wealth, diplomacy, and strategic influence. Homeland of Gandhari and Shakuni, Gandhara played a decisive political role in the Mahabharata, with its royal family profoundly shaping the fate of the Kuru dynasty.

Biography

Gandhara was one of the foremost kingdoms of northwestern Bharata, respected for its prosperity, trade and diplomatic influence. Positioned along important routes linking different regions, it became a meeting place of cultures and an influential royal power long before the events of the Kurukshetra War. The kingdom became permanently tied to the Kuru dynasty when Princess Gandhari married the blind prince Dhritarashtra. In an act of lifelong devotion, Gandhari voluntarily covered her own eyes with a cloth so that she would share her husband's darkness. Through this marriage, Gandhara became the maternal homeland of the Kaurava princes. Shakuni, Gandhari's brother, remained a powerful presence in Hastinapura. Gifted in political maneuvering and games of dice, he became Duryodhana's closest adviser. His role in the dice match that stripped Yudhishthira of his kingdom and led to Draupadi's humiliation became one of the defining turning points of the Mahabharata. During the Kurukshetra War, Gandhara stood with the Kauravas through family ties. Shakuni fought until the final stages of the conflict, where he was slain by Sahadeva. The kingdom is remembered not for vast conquests but for the influence its royal family exercised over the destiny of the Kuru house.
