The noble princess of Gandhara and queen of Hastinapura, Gandhari voluntarily blindfolded herself for life to share the fate of her blind husband, King Dhritarashtra. Revered for her unwavering devotion, spiritual discipline, and immense inner strength, she became one of the greatest symbols of sacrifice and motherhood in the Mahabharata. Though her sons chose the path of Adharma, Gandhari remained steadfast in righteousness, and her grief after the Kurukshetra War echoed through the ages

Biography

Gandhari was born as a princess of Gandhara and became the wife of Dhritarashtra, the blind Kuru king of Hastinapura. Her marriage placed her inside the heart of the Kuru dynasty, where family loyalty and royal duty would eventually collide with the destruction of her sons. When Gandhari learned that Dhritarashtra was blind, she chose to blindfold herself and live without sight. The act is remembered as a radical expression of devotion: she would not claim a privilege that her husband could never experience. Her blindness also became a defining symbol of her discipline, sacrifice and refusal to separate her fate from his. Gandhari became the mother of the Kaurava princes and Dushala. Her motherhood was powerful but deeply conflicted. She loved her sons, yet the epic does not present her as abandoning moral judgment simply because they were hers. Her warnings and grief reveal the strain between a mother's attachment and her awareness of the destructive path being taken around her. After the Kurukshetra War, Gandhari faced the devastation of her family. Her grief was immense, but it did not erase her moral voice. She condemned the destruction and directed her anguish toward those she held responsible for allowing the catastrophe to unfold. Her spiritual discipline is also linked with extraordinary ascetic power. In the aftermath of the war, her words carry enough force to curse Krishna, declaring that the Yadava clan would eventually meet destruction. Later in her life, Gandhari withdrew from royal life and went into the forest with Dhritarashtra and Kunti, where her story ended in austerity and renunciation. The roster describes her as a figure of sacrifice, motherhood, righteousness and enduring grief.

Origin

Gandhari came from the royal house of Gandhara and was chosen as the bride of Dhritarashtra, the blind prince of the Kuru dynasty. Her marriage brought her from Gandhara into Hastinapura and placed her within the complicated family structure that would eventually produce the Kaurava-Pandava conflict. The epic tradition connects Gandhari with the extraordinary birth of her children. After a prolonged pregnancy, she gave birth to a mass of flesh, which was divided and placed into vessels according to Vyasa's instructions. From this process came her many children, including the Kaurava princes and their sister Dushala.

Personality

Gandhari is disciplined, fiercely devoted and morally serious, but she is not without contradiction. She loves her sons while recognizing the danger of their choices. Her response to suffering is rarely physical action; she endures, warns, judges and finally speaks with the force of accumulated grief. Her blindfold can be read as devotion, sacrifice and self-imposed restraint at once. Her strength comes from holding her ground even when the world around her collapses.
