Biography

Gandiva is the legendary celestial bow wielded by Arjuna throughout the Mahabharata. Counted among the greatest divine weapons of the epic, it is renowned for its unmatched precision, immense strength, and the speed with which it allows a master archer to release an unbroken stream of arrows. In Arjuna's hands, Gandiva became the defining symbol of righteous warfare. The Mahabharata traces Gandiva through a succession of divine custodians before it came into Arjuna's possession. During the burning of the Khandava Forest, the fire god Agni sought Arjuna's aid. Varuna provided Gandiva, together with two inexhaustible quivers and a celestial chariot, enabling Arjuna to defend Agni against the assembled gods and heavenly beings. From that moment onward, Gandiva accompanied Arjuna through every major conflict of his life. It struck down mighty warriors, countered celestial astras, and stood at the center of the Kurukshetra War. Its greatest contest came during Arjuna's final duel with Karna, where Gandiva faced the divine bow Vijaya in one of the most celebrated battles of the epic. After the great war, the Mahabharata records that Arjuna eventually returned Gandiva to Varuna. The bow's purpose had been fulfilled. Its journey reflects a central truth of the epic: even the greatest divine gifts are entrusted to mortals only for as long as dharma requires them.

Origin

The Mahabharata states that Gandiva was originally created by Brahma and later passed through several divine hands before reaching Varuna. When Agni required Arjuna's help to consume the Khandava Forest, Varuna presented Gandiva to Arjuna along with inexhaustible quivers and a celestial chariot. From that day, Gandiva became inseparable from Arjuna's identity. Following the conclusion of his earthly mission, Arjuna returned the divine bow to Varuna, completing its sacred cycle.
