Gavaksha

Gavaksha is named in the <i>Valmiki Ramayana</i> as one of the foremost Vanara chiefs who answered Sugriva's call after his alliance with Rama. Counted among the trusted leaders of the Vanara host, he earned distinction through steadfast service, physical strength and unwavering commitment to the mission of rescuing Sita. When Sugriva dispatched his commanders to search the world for Sita, Gavaksha took part in the vast expedition that carried the Vanaras across forests, mountains and distant lands. His reliability as a leader made him one of the warriors entrusted with responsibilities beyond the battlefield. After Hanuman returned from Lanka, Gavaksha marched with the Vanara army across the ocean and joined the siege of Ravana's capital. Fighting beside Sugriva, Hanuman, Angada, Jambavan and other celebrated heroes, he relied upon immense physical power and the natural weapons of the Vanaras, hurling rocks and uprooted trees against the Rakshasa forces. Though the epic does not assign Gavaksha a single famous duel, it consistently places him among the commanders whose courage and discipline sustained the Vanara army through the final campaign. His loyalty to Rama's righteous cause became his defining legacy.

The <i>Valmiki Ramayana</i> identifies Gavaksha as one of Sugriva's distinguished Vanara chiefs. The epic records his service during Rama's campaign but preserves few details about his life before the alliance in Kishkindha. As one of Sugriva's trusted commanders, Gavaksha devoted his strength and leadership to the search for Sita and the war against Ravana, becoming part of the force that restored dharma through Rama's victory.
