Hanuman

Ramayana Sagacharacter21

The immortal son of the Wind God and the greatest devotee of Lord Rama, Hanuman embodied limitless strength, wisdom, and unwavering devotion. From leaping across the ocean to discovering Sita, burning Lanka, and carrying the Sanjeevani mountain, his heroic deeds became timeless symbols of courage, humility, and selfless service to Dharma.

Biography

In Valmiki's Ramayana, Hanuman is the son of Vayu, the Wind God, and the foremost hero among the Vanaras. Though blessed with immeasurable strength from birth, his greatness is defined not by power alone but by perfect devotion to Rama. Every action he performs is guided by service rather than pride, making him the living embodiment of selfless dharma. When the search for Sita reaches the southern ocean, Jambavan reminds Hanuman of the powers he had forgotten through an earlier curse. Rising to his full stature, Hanuman performs the Leap Across the Ocean and reaches Lanka alone. There he discovers Sita in the Ashoka grove, delivers Rama's signet ring as proof of hope, and receives her jewel to carry back as evidence that she lives. Captured after allowing himself to be taken into Ravana's court, Hanuman remains fearless before the king of Lanka. When his tail is set ablaze, he transforms punishment into victory through the Burning of Lanka, reducing large parts of the city to flames before returning safely across the sea with news of Sita. During the war, Hanuman becomes Rama's greatest champion. He defeats mighty Rakshasas, protects Lakshmana and countless allies, and when the life-restoring herb cannot be identified, he lifts the entire mountain containing it. The Carrying of the Sanjeevani Mountain saves Lakshmana and allows the battle against Ravana to continue. Hanuman's victories never change his humility. He asks for no kingdom, no reward and no glory. His only wish is eternal service to Rama. For this devotion, he is remembered across traditions as one of the Chiranjeevis, forever living wherever Rama's name is spoken with faith.

Origin

Valmiki's Ramayana identifies Hanuman as the son of Vayu and Anjana. Endowed with extraordinary strength and divine blessings from childhood, he performs astonishing feats that eventually lead sages to place a curse causing him to forget the full extent of his powers until they are recalled by others. His destiny unfolds when he meets Rama during Sugriva's exile. From that moment onward, Hanuman dedicates every gift, every victory and every breath to the service of Rama and the restoration of dharma.

Personality

Hanuman is fearless in battle and utterly humble in victory. Wise, compassionate and disciplined, he never allows immense power to become arrogance. His devotion to Rama shapes every decision, making loyalty stronger than ambition and service greater than personal glory.
