Hanuman crossed an ocean with a single leap, found Sita when no one else could and carried hope back to Rama. His greatest strength was never power alone. It was devotion without limit.

Biography

In the Valmiki Ramayana, Hanuman is the foremost hero among the vanaras and the most devoted servant of Rama. As the minister of Sugriva, he first meets Rama and Lakshmana in the forests near Kishkindha, recognizing their noble character and becoming the bridge that unites Rama with the vanara king. From that meeting onward, Hanuman dedicates every thought and every action to Rama's cause. When the search for Sita reaches the southern ocean, Hanuman is reminded of the immense powers forgotten since childhood. He expands his form and leaps across the sea to Lanka, overcoming every obstacle placed before him. There he discovers Sita in the Ashoka grove, delivers Rama's signet ring as proof of his identity and receives her Chudamani to carry back as evidence that she lives. Before leaving Lanka, Hanuman destroys large parts of Ravana's forces and allows himself to be captured so he may speak directly before the king. After Ravana orders his tail to be set on fire, Hanuman escapes and burns much of Lanka before returning to Rama with news of Sita. His mission transforms despair into certainty and gives the allied army the path to victory. During the war, Hanuman repeatedly saves Rama's forces. His most celebrated deed comes when Lakshmana is struck by the Shakti weapon. Unable to identify the required herb, Hanuman lifts the mountain that bears the Sanjivani and carries it to the battlefield, preserving Lakshmana's life. Throughout every triumph, Hanuman seeks no kingdom, wealth or fame. His reward is simply the opportunity to serve Rama.

Origin

According to the Valmiki Ramayana, Hanuman is born to Anjana and Kesari and is renowned as the son of Vayu, the Wind God, whose power is intimately connected with his birth. As a child, he mistakes the rising sun for a fruit and leaps toward it. During the events that follow, he receives blessings from numerous deities, making him exceptionally resilient and powerful. The episode in which sages cause Hanuman to forget his own powers until reminded appears within the epic tradition and explains why Jambavan later awakens his confidence before the leap to Lanka. Later devotional literature further celebrates Hanuman as an eternal servant of Rama, but the primary narrative follows the Valmiki Ramayana.

Personality

Hanuman is fearless in battle and humble in victory. He possesses immense intelligence, patience and discipline, choosing force only when wisdom no longer offers a path. Every achievement flows from devotion rather than pride. Even after accomplishing miracles, he never claims greatness for himself.
