Keechaka's Brothers · Tyrants of Matsya · Enemies of Draupadi

Mahabharata SagaCharacter103.0

The brothers of the mighty Keechaka, the Upakichakas sought revenge after his death by attempting to burn Draupadi alive. Their cruelty was swiftly punished when Bhima annihilated them, ending their reign of terror in the kingdom of Matsya.

Biography

The Upakichakas were the brothers and close kinsmen of Keechaka, the powerful commander of King Virata's army in the kingdom of Matsya. Protected by Keechaka's influence, they shared in his arrogance and exercised power without restraint. The Mahabharata presents them as a violent faction whose loyalty rested with family rather than justice. After Keechaka attempted to violate Draupadi, who was living in disguise as Sairandhri during the Pandavas' incognito exile, Bhima slew him in a secret encounter. When the Upakichakas discovered Keechaka's mangled body, grief quickly turned into rage. Refusing to seek the true killer, they blamed Draupadi and resolved to make her suffer for Keechaka's death. The Upakichakas seized Draupadi by force as she pleaded for help. Ignoring both compassion and law, they carried her toward the funeral pyre of Keechaka, intending to burn her alive beside his corpse. Their act marked one of the darkest moments in the Matsya episode, exposing the complete collapse of their sense of righteousness. Hearing Draupadi's cries, Bhima rushed to her rescue. Uprooting a massive tree as his weapon, he attacked the Upakichakas with overwhelming force. None escaped. Their destruction ended the terror they had spread through Matsya and restored justice before the Pandavas' year of concealment came to its close.

Origin

The Mahabharata identifies the Upakichakas as the brothers and close relatives of Keechaka, the commander of Matsya's army. They belonged to the same powerful clan that had risen to prominence through Keechaka's military authority. Their influence depended almost entirely upon Keechaka's position. After his death, they chose vengeance over justice, a decision that led directly to their destruction at Bhima's hands.

Personality

The Upakichakas were driven by clan loyalty without moral restraint. Fierce and physically formidable, they relied on intimidation rather than wisdom. Their greatest flaw was believing that power placed them above dharma. Their attempt to murder an innocent woman in revenge revealed courage twisted into cruelty, sealing their fate.
