The Tyrant of Janasthana

Khara

Khara · Lord of Janasthana · Commander of Fourteen Thousand Rakshasas

Ramayana Sagacharacter46

The ruthless Rakshasa ruler of Janasthana and cousin of Ravana, Khara commanded an army of fourteen thousand warriors in the Dandaka Forest. Seeking revenge for Surpanakha's humiliation, he launched a massive assault against Rama. Despite overwhelming numbers, he was slain by Rama in one of the epic's greatest displays of martial excellence.

Biography

Khara appears in the Valmiki Ramayana as the Rakshasa ruler of Janasthana, the northern military stronghold of Lanka in the Dandaka Forest. Entrusted with protecting Rakshasa dominance in the region, he commanded an army of fourteen thousand warriors and ruled through fear, violence and absolute authority. His name inspired terror among sages whose hermitages lay within his reach. When Surpanakha returned disfigured after her encounter with Rama and Lakshmana, Khara's anger erupted immediately. He first sent a group of Rakshasa warriors against Rama, but their destruction convinced him to march personally with the full strength of Janasthana. Dushana, Trishira and the vast Rakshasa host followed him into one of the greatest battles of the forest exile. The battlefield became a display of impossible odds. Rama stood alone while Lakshmana protected Sita at a safe distance. Khara's army attacked in relentless waves, yet Rama's celestial archery shattered chariots, weapons and ranks of warriors until the mighty force of Janasthana collapsed. Even after witnessing his generals fall, Khara refused to retreat. The final duel between Khara and Rama became the climax of the battle. Khara fought with extraordinary strength and relentless fury, but Rama ultimately struck him down with celestial weapons. With his death, Janasthana fell, removing one of Lanka's greatest military outposts and preparing the path toward the greater conflict with Ravana.

Origin

The Valmiki Ramayana identifies Khara as a powerful Rakshasa lord who governed Janasthana on behalf of Lanka. He was closely related to Ravana and ruled one of the kingdom's most important frontier territories, commanding its formidable military forces. His authority rested upon strength, conquest and fear rather than righteousness. That same pride led him to challenge Rama in a battle that destroyed both his army and his dominion.

Personality

Khara is fearless, ruthless and fiercely protective of his authority. He answers insult with overwhelming violence and believes strength alone decides justice. His confidence inspires loyalty among his warriors, but pride blinds him to wise counsel and drives him into a battle he cannot win.
