The Kingdom of the Vanaras

Kishkindha

Kishkindha · Vanara Capital · Kingdom of Sugriva

Ramayana SagaLocations132

Kishkindha was more than a vanara kingdom. It was the place where exile became alliance, friendship became duty and the search for Sita became a mission across the world.

Biography

In the Valmiki Ramayana, Kishkindha is the kingdom of the vanaras ruled first by Vali and later by Sugriva. Surrounded by forests, mountains and caves, it serves as the political and military center of the vanaras. The conflict between the two brothers leaves the kingdom divided until Rama arrives during his search for Sita. After meeting Sugriva at nearby Rishyamuka Mountain, Rama agrees to help him recover his kingdom. Rama kills Vali during Sugriva's challenge, and Sugriva is crowned king of Kishkindha. Angada, the son of Vali, is appointed crown prince, preserving the unity of the kingdom after the conflict. With the rainy season ended, Sugriva fulfills his promise to Rama by sending vanara search parties in every direction to look for Sita. The southern expedition led by Angada, Hanuman, Jambavan and others eventually discovers the path that leads toward Lanka. Kishkindha becomes the foundation of Rama's greatest alliance. Without its warriors, Hanuman's mission to Lanka, the construction of Setubandha and the final victory over Ravana could never have taken place.

Origin

According to the Valmiki Ramayana, Kishkindha is the established kingdom of the vanaras before Rama's arrival. Its importance comes from becoming the headquarters of the search for Sita and the gathering place of the vanara army that marches to Lanka.
