Kunti · Pritha · Pandava Mother · Daughter of Shurasena

Mahabharata SagaCharacter16.0

Born as Princess Pritha and adopted by King Kuntibhoja, Kunti was blessed by Sage Durvasa with a divine mantra capable of invoking the gods. Through this sacred boon she became the mother of Karna, Yudhishthira, Bhima, and Arjuna, forever shaping the destiny of the Mahabharata. Revered for her unwavering courage, wisdom, and devotion to Dharma, Kunti remained the unshakable pillar of the Pandavas through exile, hardship, and war.

Biography

Kunti was born as Pritha, the daughter of Shurasena, and was given in adoption to King Kuntibhoja. She grew up within the royal household of Kuntibhoja and became known as Kunti. Her life would later connect several of the most important bloodlines in the Mahabharata. While serving Sage Durvasa, Kunti received a divine mantra through which she could invoke a deity and receive a child from that deity. Before her marriage, she tested the mantra by invoking Surya. Karna was born from that encounter, and Kunti placed the infant in a basket and set him afloat, keeping his birth secret for many years. Kunti later married Pandu. After Pandu was unable to father children because of his curse, Kunti used the mantra to invoke the gods. Through this boon she became the mother of Yudhishthira, Bhima and Arjuna. She also shared the mantra with Madri, who invoked the Ashvins and became the mother of Nakula and Sahadeva. After Pandu and Madri died, Kunti returned to Hastinapura with the five Pandavas and became the central maternal figure of their household. She guided them through the hostility of the Kuru court, exile and repeated danger. Her strength was not expressed through weapons. It appeared in endurance, judgment and the ability to keep her family moving forward. During the Kurukshetra conflict, Kunti carried a devastating secret: Karna, the great warrior fighting for Duryodhana, was her firstborn son. She revealed his true birth to him before the war and asked him to join his brothers. Karna refused, choosing loyalty to Duryodhana, though he assured Kunti that her five sons would remain five even after the battle. After the war, Kunti continued to live with the consequences of the destruction. She eventually joined Dhritarashtra and Gandhari in their withdrawal to the forest. Her life closes not with royal triumph but with austerity, grief and renunciation.

Origin

Kunti was born as Pritha into the Yadava family and was adopted by King Kuntibhoja, after which she became known as Kunti. Her life changed when Sage Durvasa, pleased with her service, gave her a mantra capable of invoking the gods. She first used the mantra to invoke Surya and secretly became the mother of Karna. Later, as the wife of Pandu, she used the same sacred boon to invoke deities and become the mother of Yudhishthira, Bhima and Arjuna. The boon became the central force through which her motherhood shaped the future of the Kuru dynasty.

Personality

Kunti is resilient, strategic and deeply protective of her family. She does not simply endure hardship; she makes difficult choices inside it. Her life contains painful contradictions: she loves Karna yet keeps his birth secret for years, guides the Pandavas while carrying guilt over the past, and remains devoted to Dharma while knowing that every choice can carry a terrible cost. Her strength is quiet, deliberate and rooted in responsibility.
