Ramayana SagaFoil Card156

Lakshmana never sought a throne or glory. He chose a harder path. Every step of Rama's exile, every battle of Lanka and every sacrifice became his own.

Biography

In the Valmiki Ramayana, Lakshmana is the son of King Dasharatha and Queen Sumitra, and the younger brother of Rama. From childhood, his life is inseparable from Rama's. When Rama is exiled to the forest, Lakshmana immediately chooses to accompany him, leaving behind royal comfort and his wife Urmila without hesitation. Throughout the exile, Lakshmana serves as protector, companion and warrior. He builds forest dwellings, guards Rama and Sita through countless nights and defeats many formidable enemies, including Viradha and the rakshasas who threaten the sages. During the encounter with Surpanakha, he cuts off her nose and ears after she attacks Sita, an event that ultimately leads Ravana toward his disastrous decision. During the war in Lanka, Lakshmana proves himself one of the greatest archers of the age. He defeats powerful commanders including Atikaya and, after a fierce battle, slays Indrajit, Ravana's most dangerous son. Before that victory, Lakshmana himself is struck down by the Shakti weapon released by Indrajit. Hanuman's journey to bring the Sanjivani-bearing mountain restores him to life and allows him to return to battle. After Ravana's fall, Lakshmana returns with Rama to Ayodhya and remains his steadfast supporter throughout the reign. His story is defined not by personal ambition but by complete dedication. His greatness lies in choosing another's duty as his own and carrying it without complaint until the very end.

Origin

According to the Valmiki Ramayana, Lakshmana is born to Dasharatha and Sumitra through the sacred sacrifice performed for the king's heirs. He is the twin brother of Shatrughna and grows with an extraordinary attachment to Rama from childhood. Later Vaishnava tradition, especially the Vishnu Purana and other Puranic sources, identifies Lakshmana as an incarnation of Shesha, the eternal serpent who serves Vishnu. This understanding belongs to later tradition rather than the primary narrative of the Valmiki Ramayana.

Personality

Lakshmana is courageous, fiercely loyal and intensely protective. His temper rises quickly when injustice threatens those he loves, yet his anger is always directed toward defending others rather than advancing himself. Discipline, sacrifice and unwavering devotion define every major decision of his life.
