Biography

Makaraksha appears in the Valmiki Ramayana as the son of Khara, the formidable Rakshasa whom Rama had slain in the Dandaka forest during his exile. The memory of his father's death shaped Makaraksha's purpose. When the war reached Lanka, he saw the conflict not merely as the defense of Ravana's kingdom but as an opportunity for vengeance. After the deaths of several great Rakshasa commanders, Ravana entrusted Makaraksha with leading forces against Rama. Filled with rage and confidence in his martial skill, he entered the battlefield as one of Lanka's strongest remaining champions. His command, courage and mastery of weapons made him a dangerous opponent in open war. Makaraksha eventually confronted Rama in direct combat. The duel was fought with bows and celestial weapons before escalating into a decisive exchange of divine missiles. Despite his determination and formidable skill, Makaraksha could not overcome Rama's superior mastery. Rama finally slew Makaraksha with a divine arrow, ending the vengeance that had driven the Rakshasa prince throughout the war. His death removed another of Ravana's powerful commanders and further weakened Lanka's resistance.

Origin

The Valmiki Ramayana identifies Makaraksha as the son of Khara, the Rakshasa ruler of Janasthana who was slain by Rama during the exile in the Dandaka forest. His father's defeat became the defining event of his life. When the war for Lanka unfolded, Makaraksha entered the battlefield driven by filial loyalty and the desire to avenge Khara. That purpose remained at the center of his final confrontation with Rama.

Personality

Makaraksha is proud, fearless and fiercely loyal to his family. Revenge fuels many of his decisions, yet he never hides behind deception or avoids battle. He chooses to face Rama openly, believing that honor in combat can restore the legacy of his fallen father, even if it costs him his life.
