The sacred birthplace of Lord Krishna and the ancient capital of the Yadavas. Once ruled by the tyrant Kamsa, Mathura witnessed Krishna's rise, the fall of oppression, and the restoration of righteousness before the Yadavas established their new capital at Dwarka.

Biography

Mathura was the ancient capital of the Yadavas and one of the most revered cities of Bharata. Situated on the banks of the Yamuna, it became the center of the Vrishni, Andhaka and other Yadava clans. Its greatest place in the epic tradition comes from being the birthplace of Krishna, whose life transformed the destiny of both the city and the wider world. The city fell under the rule of Kamsa after he seized the throne from his father Ugrasena. Warned by a divine prophecy that Devaki's eighth son would bring about his death, Kamsa imprisoned Devaki and Vasudeva and slew their newborn children. Krishna was secretly carried across the Yamuna to Gokula on the night of his birth, preserving the child destined to end the tyrant's reign. Years later, Krishna returned to Mathura with Balarama. He defeated the royal wrestlers Chanura and Mushtika before slaying Kamsa in the royal arena. Ugrasena was restored to the throne, ending the reign of fear and restoring lawful rule to the Yadava kingdom. Mathura continued to face repeated invasions from Jarasandha, who sought revenge for Kamsa's death. To protect the Yadavas from continual warfare, Krishna led his people westward and established the fortified city of Dwarka. Even after the royal court moved, Mathura remained forever revered as the birthplace of Krishna and the city where tyranny gave way to dharma.

Origin

Mathura was an ancient Yadava capital long before the birth of Krishna. It served as the political and cultural heart of the Yadava clans under the rule of King Ugrasena. Its greatest significance began with the birth of Krishna within its prison walls. The city's history thereafter became inseparable from the fall of Kamsa, the restoration of Ugrasena and the eventual migration of the Yadavas to Dwarka.

Personality
