Mithila is where destiny chose its king. Within its halls, Rama lifted Shiva's Bow, won Sita's hand and united two royal houses through dharma rather than conquest.

Biography

In the <i>Valmiki Ramayana</i>, Mithila is the capital of King Janaka's kingdom of Videha. Celebrated for righteous rule and devotion to sacred duties, the city becomes one of the most revered royal capitals in the epic. It is here that Sage Vishvamitra brings Rama and Lakshmana after the protection of his sacrifice. King Janaka announces that whoever can lift and string Shiva's Bow will win the hand of his daughter Sita. Many powerful rulers fail before Rama respectfully approaches the divine bow. As he attempts to string it, the bow breaks with a mighty sound, fulfilling Janaka's vow. The breaking of Shiva's Bow leads directly to the marriage of Rama and Sita. The celebrations in Mithila unite the royal families of Ayodhya and Videha. Alongside Rama and Sita, the marriages of Lakshmana and Urmila, Bharata and Mandavi, and Shatrughna and Shrutakirti are also solemnized. Mithila is remembered as a city where strength was tested through righteousness rather than ambition. It marks the beginning of Rama and Sita's shared journey long before exile, separation and war reshape their lives.
