The surviving critical text presents this as the intervention of Ashvasena through Karna's arrow rather than describing Karna's shot simply as an ordinary arrow. Beyond this celebrated episode, the Nagastra is traditionally understood as a celestial weapon that releases serpent manifestations capable of pursuing and overwhelming opponents. Its reputation comes from combining divine precision with the fearsome symbolism of venom, constriction and relentless pursuit. The Nagastra also reflects the wider place of the Nagas within epic tradition. The surviving critical <i>Mahabharata</i> does not preserve a separate narrative describing the creation of the Nagastra or naming its first divine bearer. It belongs to the ancient body of celestial astras transmitted through sacred instruction and mantra. Its identity is rooted in the power of the Naga race. Traditional astra lore consistently recognizes the Garudastra as its natural counter because of the eternal rivalry between Garuda and the serpents.
