Nikumbhila

In the <i>Valmiki Ramayana</i>, Nikumbhila is a sacred grove near Lanka where Indrajit performs a powerful sacrificial ritual before returning to battle. The site is deeply associated with rites that strengthen the rakshasa prince before combat. Though the place itself is sacred, its role in the war is shaped by the intentions of those who use it. After Indrajit wounds Rama and Lakshmana in earlier battles and repeatedly troubles the vanara army through illusion and celestial weapons, Vibhishana reveals an important secret. He tells Rama that Indrajit must complete his sacrifice at Nikumbhila before gaining its full benefit. If the ritual is interrupted, the prince can be defeated in open battle. Rama entrusts Lakshmana with the mission. Accompanied by Vibhishana, Hanuman and the vanara warriors, Lakshmana reaches Nikumbhila before the sacrifice is completed. The ritual is broken, forcing Indrajit to abandon it and face his enemies directly. The battle that follows becomes one of the greatest duels of the Ramayana. Freed from the advantage the completed sacrifice would have given him, Indrajit is finally slain by Lakshmana. Nikumbhila is therefore remembered as the place where strategy, timely action and righteous resolve altered the course of the war.
