Panchavati was meant to be a peaceful home during exile. Instead, it became the place where the events leading to the war against Ravana began.

Biography

In the Valmiki Ramayana, Panchavati is the forest region near the Godavari River where Rama, Sita and Lakshmana establish their hermitage during the years of exile. Following the guidance of Sage Agastya, they choose this beautiful woodland as their home. Lakshmana builds the dwelling, and for a time the three live peacefully among the forests and rivers. The calm ends when Shurpanakha encounters Rama and Lakshmana. After her advances are rejected and Lakshmana disfigures her, she seeks the help of Khara and Dushana. Rama defeats them and their rakshasa forces, bringing the conflict to Ravana's attention. Determined to take revenge, Ravana enlists Maricha, who assumes the form of the Golden Deer. Captivated by its beauty, Sita asks Rama to capture it. Rama pursues the deer while Lakshmana is eventually drawn away after hearing Maricha imitate Rama's voice. Left alone, Sita is abducted by Ravana from Panchavati. Jatayu attempts to rescue her but is mortally wounded. The peaceful forest becomes the place where exile ends and the search for Sita begins, setting the entire remainder of the Ramayana into motion.
