Parashurama is the warrior-sage whose command over arms is matched by the force of his vows. In the Mahabharata, kings and legendary warriors approach him as a teacher, while his own life shows how a vow can become both power and burden.

Biography

Parashurama, the son of the sage Jamadagni, belongs to the Bhargava lineage. The Mahabharata remembers him as a formidable master of weapons and as the man who made the earth bereft of Kshatriyas twenty-one times. After those campaigns, he went to Mahendra and devoted himself to ascetic practice. ([Wisdom Library][1]) His reputation as a martial teacher reaches deep into the Kuru story. Bhishma had learned from him, and when Amba sought justice after her ordeal with Bhishma, Parashurama intervened on her behalf. His command to his former disciple brought teacher and student onto the field against one another. They fought for twenty-three days without either defeating the other. ([Vyasa Online][2]) The duel revealed the strange position Parashurama occupies in the epic. He is a Brahmin who fights like a great warrior, yet he is also bound by the duties and promises he accepts. When Bhishma refused to abandon his vow of celibacy, Parashurama fought him rather than simply dismissing Amba's claim. The conflict finally ended without a victor when Bhishma was prevented from releasing a weapon that could have escalated the destruction. ([Vyasa Online][3]) Parashurama also becomes part of Karna's story. Karna approaches him for martial instruction while concealing his true identity. Parashurama teaches him, but later discovers the deception when Karna endures an extreme wound without disturbing his sleeping teacher. The resulting curse becomes one of the forces that shape Karna's final battle. ([Wisdom Library][4]) Drona too seeks Parashurama's knowledge. The tradition records that Parashurama gave Drona his weapons and the science of arms. Through such disciples, his influence continues long after he leaves the centre of the battlefield. His legacy is not only what he destroyed. It is what he taught. ([Wisdom Library][5])

Origin

The Mahabharata identifies Parashurama as the son of Jamadagni and a member of the Bhargava lineage. His story is tied to the violent conflict between his family and Kshatriya rulers, culminating in his campaigns against the Kshatriyas and his later withdrawal to Mahendra for ascetic practice. ([Wisdom Library][1])

Personality

Parashurama is severe, disciplined and intensely bound to his word. He can become terrifying when he believes a duty has been violated, yet he is also capable of honouring a disciple whose own vow conflicts with his command. His encounter with Bhishma shows the contradiction at his core: he demands obedience as a teacher, while ultimately recognizing the force of a vow he cannot break himself. His power is inseparable from restraint, anger and responsibility.
