The Last Emperor of the Kurus

Parikshit

Grandson of Arjuna · Protected by Krishna · Emperor of Hastinapura

Mahabharata SagaCharacter27.0

The grandson of Arjuna and the only surviving heir of the Kuru dynasty, Parikshit was miraculously saved in his mother's womb by Lord Krishna from Ashwatthama's Brahmastra. He restored peace after the Kurukshetra War and became one of the greatest emperors of ancient Bharatavarsha.

Biography

Parikshit was born into the Kuru dynasty as the son of Abhimanyu and Uttara. Before his birth, Ashwatthama released the Brahmastra to destroy the unborn heir of the Pandavas. Lord Krishna intervened and protected the child within his mother's womb, ensuring the survival of the Kuru lineage after the devastation of the Kurukshetra War. Raised under the guidance of the Pandavas and the elders of Hastinapura, Parikshit inherited the virtues of his ancestors along with the responsibilities of rebuilding a shattered kingdom. After Yudhishthira and the Pandavas retired from worldly rule, Parikshit ascended the throne and restored stability across the realm. His reign became known for justice, prosperity and adherence to dharma. The Mahabharata recounts that during a hunting expedition, Parikshit insulted the sage Shamika by placing a dead snake around the sage's neck after receiving no response. The sage's son, Shringa, cursed the emperor to die from the bite of Takshaka within seven days. Accepting the curse, Parikshit renounced worldly attachments and prepared himself for death. During those final seven days, the sage Shuka instructed Parikshit in the highest spiritual knowledge. At the appointed time, Takshaka fulfilled the curse. Parikshit's son Janamejaya succeeded him, ensuring the continuation of the Kuru dynasty.

Origin

According to the Mahabharata, Parikshit was the posthumous son of Abhimanyu, who fell in the Kurukshetra War. While still in Uttara's womb, he became the target of Ashwatthama's Brahmastra, launched to extinguish the Pandava lineage. Krishna's Protection preserved the unborn child from the Brahmastra. Because he was believed to examine every face in search of the divine protector he had seen before birth, he received the name Parikshit.

Personality

Parikshit is remembered as righteous, compassionate and dutiful. He ruled with justice and accepted responsibility even for his own mistakes. His final days revealed humility and devotion, choosing spiritual wisdom over fear when confronted with certain death.
