The Pramohanastra is a celestial weapon whose name is derived from <i>pramohana</i>, meaning bewilderment or profound confusion. Within the tradition of divine astras found in the <i>Mahabharata</i> and related literature, it belongs to the class of weapons that affect the minds and perceptions of those they confront rather than relying solely upon physical destruction. The surviving critical text preserves references to bewildering and stupefying celestial weapons, but it does not provide an extensive narrative devoted exclusively to the Pramohanastra. Like several lesser-known astras, it is remembered chiefly through the broader science of divine warfare, where knowledge and mantra are as decisive as martial strength. Traditional understanding describes the Pramohanastra as a weapon capable of disrupting discipline on the battlefield. Soldiers lose awareness of formations, commands become difficult to follow and coordinated attacks collapse into disorder. Its greatest strength lies in breaking unity rather than defeating opponents through direct force. The weapon reflects an important idea found throughout the epics: victory is not achieved by strength alone. A confused army can fall even before suffering heavy losses. The Pramohanastra therefore represents mastery over perception, discipline and the fragile order upon which every army depends.

The critical epic tradition does not identify the creator or first wielder of the Pramohanastra. It is recognized as one of the celestial astras transmitted through sacred instruction, austerity and mantra rather than forged by mortal hands. Later traditional understanding places the Pramohanastra among the divine weapons that influence consciousness instead of relying entirely upon elemental destruction. Its reputation rests upon its ability to disturb the mind while remaining subject to the sacred discipline governing all celestial astras.

The Pramohanastra has no human will, yet it reflects subtlety instead of fury. It is patient, calculated and precise. Rather than overwhelming opponents through brute force, it quietly dissolves their confidence, discipline and coordination until even a powerful army struggles to act as one.
