Putana

Rakshasi of Kamsa · Mistress of Deadly Disguise · Granted Divine Liberation

Mahabharata SagaCharacter85.0

The demoness sent by Kamsa to kill the infant Krishna, Putana disguised herself as a loving mother and offered poisoned milk. Krishna instead drew out her very life, granting her liberation despite her evil intent, making her story one of both deception and divine grace.

Biography

Putana appears prominently in the Bhagavata Purana, the Vishnu Purana and the Harivamsha as one of the first powerful rakshasis sent by Kamsa to destroy the infant Krishna. Gifted with supernatural powers and the ability to assume a beautiful form, she entered Gokula disguised as a noble woman. Neither guards nor villagers recognized the danger hidden behind her graceful appearance. Carrying deadly poison upon her breast, Putana lifted the infant Krishna and offered him poisoned milk. Instead of being harmed, Krishna latched onto her and drank not only the poison but also her very life force. Unable to free herself, Putana cried out in agony and resumed her gigantic rakshasi form before collapsing outside the village. The astonishing moment that followed became one of the defining episodes of Krishna's childhood. Although Putana had come with murderous intent, Krishna accepted the act of offering him milk as a distorted form of motherly service. The Bhagavata Purana declares that she attained liberation through contact with the Supreme, receiving a destiny far beyond what her actions deserved. Putana's story is remembered not merely as the defeat of a demoness but as a lesson in divine compassion. Her deception brought destruction upon herself, yet Krishna transformed even her final moment into an act of grace. Few antagonists in Hindu tradition receive such an extraordinary end.

Origin

In the Bhagavata Purana, Putana is introduced as a powerful rakshasi serving Kamsa after he learned of the prophecy foretelling his death at Krishna's hands. Ordered to destroy newborn children, she traveled across the land using illusion and disguise to approach her victims. Her mission ended in Gokula when she encountered the infant Krishna. What began as an attempt to murder the divine child became one of the earliest revelations of Krishna's supreme nature and boundless mercy.

Personality

Putana was cunning, ruthless and patient. She relied upon beauty, deception and false affection instead of honorable combat. Her willingness to disguise herself as a nurturing mother revealed the depth of her cruelty, while her final liberation illustrates that divine grace can surpass even the darkest intentions.
