Raghava · Maryada Purushottama · Prince of Ayodhya

Ramayana SagaFoil Card152

Rama could have claimed a kingdom by force. Instead, he chose exile to uphold his father's word. Every victory that followed was built upon that first sacrifice.

Biography

In the Valmiki Ramayana, Rama is the eldest son of King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalya, born into the ancient Ikshvaku dynasty of Ayodhya. Trained in statecraft, warfare and the duties of a prince, he accompanies Sage Vishvamitra in his youth, protecting sacred sacrifices and defeating powerful rakshasas. At Mithila, Rama strings and breaks the great bow of Shiva, winning the hand of Princess Sita in marriage. On the eve of his coronation, Queen Kaikeyi claims two boons previously promised by Dasharatha. Rama accepts fourteen years of exile without resentment, choosing obedience to his father's word over the throne. Joined by Sita and Lakshmana, he lives in the forests of Bharata, protecting sages and confronting evil wherever it appears. The course of the epic changes when Ravana abducts Sita from Panchavati. Rama's search leads him to Sugriva, Hanuman and the vanaras, forming an alliance that crosses the ocean to Lanka. During the great war, Rama defeats mighty warriors including Kumbhakarna before finally slaying Ravana with the Brahmastra, ending the tyranny of Lanka and restoring righteousness. After returning to Ayodhya, Rama is crowned king, beginning the reign remembered as Rama Rajya. In the later books of the Valmiki Ramayana, his commitment to royal duty leads to painful personal decisions regarding Sita. The epic presents Rama not as a ruler free from suffering, but as one who continually places dharma above personal desire, even when the cost falls upon himself.

Later traditions, including the Vishnu Purana, the Bhagavata Purana and many devotional works, identify Rama as an incarnation of Vishnu. While this understanding is central to later Hindu tradition, the primary narrative presented here follows the Valmiki Ramayana.
