Ravana

Born to the sage Vishrava and the Rakshasi Kaikesi, Ravana united immense learning with overwhelming strength. In Valmiki's Ramayana he is portrayed as a brilliant scholar, a master of the Vedas, an accomplished ruler and one of the greatest warriors of his age. His greatness was real, and so was the pride that eventually consumed it. Through severe austerities, Ravana pleased Brahma and received extraordinary boons that made him nearly invincible against gods, Gandharvas, Yakshas and many celestial beings. Confident that no one could challenge him, he expanded Lanka into a magnificent kingdom whose wealth, architecture and military power became legendary throughout the three worlds. Yet Ravana's greatest enemy was never another king. It was his own arrogance. Ignoring the counsel of Mandodari, Vibhishana and Kumbhakarna, he abducted Sita after deceiving Rama and Lakshmana. That single act transformed his unmatched empire into the stage for its own destruction. Throughout the war for Lanka, Ravana displayed astonishing mastery of celestial weapons, strategy and personal combat. Even after the deaths of Prahasta, Kumbhakarna and Indrajit, he refused to surrender. His final duel against Rama became a clash between extraordinary power and unwavering righteousness. Rama ultimately killed Ravana with the Brahmastra, bringing an end to the reign of Lanka's greatest emperor. Ravana remains one of the most complex figures in the Ramayana. He was a sovereign of immense intellect, a devoted ascetic and a peerless warrior, but his refusal to master his own pride proved stronger than every boon and every weapon he possessed.

Valmiki's Ramayana identifies Ravana as the son of the sage Vishrava and the Rakshasi Kaikesi. He was the elder brother of Kumbhakarna, Vibhishana and Shurpanakha. Though born into a lineage that combined Brahmin learning and Rakshasa heritage, Ravana pursued extraordinary austerities to obtain supreme power. Pleased by his penance, Brahma granted Ravana powerful boons against numerous celestial races. Believing humans too insignificant to threaten him, Ravana did not seek protection from them. That omission ultimately allowed Rama, born as a human prince, to become the instrument of his downfall.

Ravana is fearless, brilliant and fiercely ambitious. He commands respect through intellect as much as strength, excelling in governance, scholarship and warfare. Yet his confidence grows into arrogance, making him reject wise counsel even from those who love him most. His greatness is undeniable, but so is his inability to place dharma above pride and desire.
