Mahabharata SagaCharacter58.0

The beloved wife of Vasudeva and mother of Balarama, Rohini protected the Yadava lineage during Kamsa's reign of terror. Revered for her compassion, wisdom, and unwavering devotion, she played a vital role in raising Krishna and Balarama during their childhood in Gokula.

Biography

Rohini appears in the Mahabharata and is described more fully in the Bhagavata Purana, Harivamsha and Vishnu Purana as one of the wives of Vasudeva and the mother of Balarama. During Kamsa's persecution of the Yadavas, she lived under the protection of Nanda in Gokula, away from the dangers surrounding Mathura. According to the Puranic tradition, the embryo of Balarama was mystically transferred from Devaki's womb to Rohini's womb through the divine power of Yogamaya. Because of this miraculous transfer, Balarama received the name Sankarshana. Rohini safely gave birth to him in Gokula while Kamsa remained unaware. When Krishna was secretly brought to Gokula after his birth, Rohini became one of the principal figures who cared for both Krishna and Balarama during their childhood. Alongside Yashoda and Nanda, she helped provide the secure and loving home in which the two brothers were raised before their destiny unfolded. Rohini's place in the tradition is not defined by warfare or political ambition. Her greatness lies in preserving the Yadava lineage through patience, courage and maternal devotion during one of its darkest periods.

Origin

According to the Mahabharata and later Puranic tradition, Rohini was one of the principal wives of Vasudeva. During Kamsa's rule, she remained in Gokula under the protection of Nanda while many members of the Yadava family faced imprisonment and persecution. The Bhagavata Purana recounts that Yogamaya transferred the unborn Balarama from Devaki's womb to Rohini's womb. This miraculous event ensured the child's survival and preserved the future of the Yadava dynasty.

Personality

Rohini is remembered as compassionate, patient and deeply righteous. She remained calm in the face of danger, devoted herself to her family without seeking recognition and embodied the quiet strength that sustained the Yadavas through hardship.
