Rukmi (brother of Rukmini)

Rukmi was the eldest son of King Bhishmaka of Vidarbha and the elder brother of Rukmini. A celebrated warrior and capable prince, he believed that political alliances were the foundation of royal power. Determined to strengthen his kingdom, he supported the marriage of Rukmini to Shishupala despite knowing that his sister had devoted her heart to Krishna. When Krishna carried Rukmini away from her svayamvara, Rukmi pursued him with a powerful army. Confident in his skill as an archer, he challenged Krishna to single combat. The duel ended in complete defeat. Krishna spared Rukmi's life at Rukmini's request but humiliated him by shaving his head and moustache, leaving his pride more deeply wounded than his body. Having vowed never to return to Kundina until he had defeated Krishna, Rukmi founded the city of Bhojakata and established himself there as its ruler. Though his hostility toward Krishna endured, he continued to govern his kingdom and remained respected as an accomplished warrior and leader. By the time of the Kurukshetra War, Rukmi sought to join the conflict. He first offered his support to the Pandavas, but Arjuna declined. He then approached Duryodhana, who also refused his aid. As a result, Rukmi took no part in the great war. His story is remembered as one in which remarkable ability was repeatedly overshadowed by uncompromising pride.

Rukmi was born into the royal family of Vidarbha as the son of King Bhishmaka and the elder brother of Princess Rukmini. Trained in the duties of kingship and warfare, he became renowned for his mastery of archery and his ambition to expand the influence of his house. His determination to arrange Rukmini's marriage for political advantage placed him in direct opposition to Krishna. That decision shaped the rest of his life, leading to his defeat, the founding of Bhojakata and a rivalry that never truly faded.

Rukmi was courageous, intelligent and fiercely ambitious. <b>His greatest strength was his determination, and his greatest flaw was the pride that refused to accept defeat.</b> Even after humiliation at Krishna's hands, he neither abandoned his royal duties nor surrendered his sense of honor, choosing instead to build a new kingdom rather than live with a broken vow.
