Biography

Rukmini appears in the Mahabharata and is described in greater detail in the Harivamsha, Bhagavata Purana and Vishnu Purana. She was the daughter of King Bhishmaka of Vidarbha. Although her brother Rukmi sought to marry her to Shishupala, Rukmini had already chosen Krishna as her husband after hearing of his virtues and deeds. Knowing that her marriage was being arranged against her wishes, Rukmini secretly sent a message to Krishna through a trusted Brahmana. In the letter, she requested that he rescue her before the wedding. Krishna answered her plea, arrived at Kundina and carried her away in his chariot after she had offered prayers at the temple of the goddess. The pursuing kings were defeated, and Rukmi himself was overcome before being spared by Krishna. As the chief queen of Dvaraka, Rukmini became a model of devotion, wisdom and righteous conduct. The Puranic tradition reveres her as an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi, inseparable from Krishna's divine purpose. She is also remembered as the mother of Pradyumna and several other sons mentioned in the Puranas. Rukmini's legacy rests not upon military victories but upon unwavering devotion and moral strength. Her choice to follow Krishna despite overwhelming opposition became one of the defining acts of faith in the Krishna tradition.
