The Doomed Prince of the Yadavas

Samba

Son of Krishna · Son of Jambavati · Yadava Warrior

Mahabharata SagaCharacter70.0

The spirited son of Lord Krishna and Jambavati, Samba was renowned for his bravery, mischief, and extraordinary valor. Though a capable warrior, his prank upon the sages led to the curse that ultimately brought about the destruction of the Yadava dynasty.

Biography

Samba appears in the Mahabharata and is described more extensively in the Harivamsha, Bhagavata Purana and Vishnu Purana as one of the sons of Krishna and Jambavati. Handsome, fearless and spirited, he inherited the courage of his father but was equally remembered for his impulsive nature. His skill as a warrior earned him recognition among the Yadava princes. Samba was an accomplished chariot fighter and archer. One of his best-known exploits was carrying away Lakshmana, the daughter of Duryodhana, according to the kshatriya custom of marriage by abduction. He was captured by the Kauravas after a fierce fight, but Balarama secured his release and the marriage was ultimately accepted, strengthening ties between the Yadavas and the Kuru house. His greatest legacy, however, came not through battle but through a reckless act. Along with other Yadava youths, Samba disguised himself as a pregnant woman and mockingly asked a group of visiting sages to predict the unborn child's future. Seeing through the deception, the sages pronounced a terrible curse that the disguised figure would give birth to an iron pestle destined to destroy the Yadava race. The curse came to pass despite every attempt to prevent it. The iron pestle was ground into powder, yet its remnants eventually became the instrument of the Yadavas' self-destruction at Prabhasa. Samba's prank did not cause the downfall alone, but it became the event through which destiny unfolded.

Origin

According to the Harivamsha and later Puranic tradition, Samba was born to Krishna and Jambavati. Jambavati had long desired a son, and Krishna obtained a blessing through severe worship of Lord Shiva before Samba's birth. Raised among the Yadava princes of Dvaraka, Samba grew into a courageous warrior whose energy and confidence were matched by a tendency toward mischief. Those qualities defined both his greatest achievements and his greatest mistake.

Personality

Samba was bold, adventurous and fiercely confident. He loved challenge, excelled in combat and rarely hesitated in the face of danger. Yet his playful nature often crossed into recklessness, and a single thoughtless prank became inseparable from his legacy.
