Sampati

In Valmiki's Ramayana, Sampati is introduced as the elder brother of the noble vulture king Jatayu. In their youth, the brothers soared toward the blazing sun to test their strength. When Jatayu flew too close to its unbearable heat, Sampati spread his own wings over his younger brother, shielding him from the flames. The sacrifice saved Jatayu but left Sampati's wings burnt, forcing him to live earthbound for years. Separated from the skies that had once been his home, Sampati endured long years of hardship. His body weakened, but neither his memory nor his wisdom faded. Rather than becoming bitter, he accepted his fate and continued to observe the world with extraordinary sight that reached far beyond ordinary vision. When the Vanara search party led by Angada fell into despair while searching for Sita, Sampati overheard them speaking of Jatayu's death at Ravana's hands. Grieving for his brother, he questioned the warriors and learned of Rama's quest. Using his divine vision, he saw across the ocean and identified Lanka as the place where Sita was being held. That single revelation changed the course of the Ramayana. Sampati did not fight Ravana or cross the sea himself, yet his guidance gave the Vanaras the certainty they needed. Hanuman's leap toward Lanka began with Sampati's words. His greatest victory came not through flight, but through wisdom earned after sacrifice. The tradition remembers Sampati as proof that strength does not disappear when the body fails. A life marked by loss became the turning point that carried Rama's mission forward.

According to Valmiki's Ramayana, Sampati and Jatayu were born as mighty vulture brothers. The epic focuses less on their ancestry and more on the defining moment of their youth, when Sampati sacrificed his own wings to save Jatayu from the burning heat of the sun. His years without flight became years of endurance rather than defeat. By the time Rama's search for Sita reached him, Sampati's greatest gift was no longer his wings but the far-reaching vision that allowed him to see what no one else could.

Sampati is patient, wise and deeply protective. His love for Jatayu defines his earliest sacrifice, while his compassion for Rama's cause defines his final service. Though burdened by loss, he never gives in to despair. He understands that even someone who cannot stand beside heroes in battle can still change the fate of the world through truth and guidance.
