Sanjaya (narrator to Dhritarashtra)

Sanjaya served as the trusted counselor and charioteer of King Dhritarashtra in the Mahabharata. Though not remembered for martial strength, he became one of the epic's most important figures because he witnessed events that no ordinary mortal could see. His greatest weapon was truth. Before the Kurukshetra War began, Sage Vyasa offered Dhritarashtra the gift of divine vision so that he could witness the conflict himself. The blind king declined, unable to bear the suffering that would unfold. Vyasa instead bestowed the gift upon Sanjaya, granting him the ability to perceive the war from afar and know events beyond ordinary sight. From the royal court in Hastinapura, Sanjaya described every major moment of the eighteen-day war to Dhritarashtra. His narration preserves the opening dialogue between Krishna and Arjuna, the fall of great warriors such as Bhishma, Drona, Karna, and Duryodhana, and the gradual destruction of the Kuru dynasty. His account is marked by honesty even when the truth brought grief to the king he served. Sanjaya never allowed loyalty to overcome righteousness. He spoke without distortion, praised virtue wherever it appeared, and condemned injustice regardless of which side committed it. Because of his unwavering commitment to truth, he became one of the Mahabharata's most trusted voices and the principal witness through whom generations remember the Kurukshetra War.
