Mahabharata SagaCharacter93.0

The spirited queen of Lord Krishna and daughter of Satrajit, Satyabhama was renowned for her courage and determination. She accompanied Krishna in the battle against Narakasura, where her valor and devotion became legendary. Regal, fearless, and strong-willed, she remains one of Dwaraka's greatest queens.

Biography

Satyabhama was the daughter of Satrajit, the Yadava noble who possessed the celebrated Syamantaka jewel. Her story is closely connected with the Syamantaka episode preserved in the Bhagavata Purana, Vishnu Purana and Harivamsha. After Krishna cleared his name of false accusations surrounding the jewel and restored it to its rightful owner, Satrajit gave his daughter in marriage to Krishna as an act of reconciliation and honor. Among Krishna's principal queens, Satyabhama became renowned for her bold spirit and unwavering confidence. Unlike queens who remained behind palace walls, she accompanied Krishna on significant journeys and was remembered for standing beside him during moments of danger. Her courage, combined with sharp judgment and deep devotion, earned her lasting respect throughout Dvaraka. Her most celebrated appearance came during Krishna's campaign against Narakasura. Riding with Krishna into battle, Satyabhama witnessed the destruction of the tyrant who had oppressed both gods and mortals. Puranic traditions differ on certain details of the battle. In several tellings, Satyabhama herself strikes the decisive blow after Krishna momentarily falls unconscious, while in others Krishna slays Narakasura and Satyabhama accompanies him throughout the campaign. Across these traditions, her courage and presence on the battlefield remain constant. After Narakasura's defeat, Krishna and Satyabhama restored the stolen treasures, including Aditi's divine earrings, and liberated the captive princesses imprisoned by the asura king. Satyabhama's legacy is therefore remembered not only for valor but also for helping restore justice and dignity after tyranny had fallen.
