Setubandha turned an uncrossable sea into a road. Built by the vanara army under Nala's direction, it carried Rama's forces toward the war that would end Ravana's reign.

Biography

In the Valmiki Ramayana, Setubandha is the bridge constructed across the ocean after Rama receives permission from the Ocean God to begin the crossing. The task of building the bridge is entrusted to Nala, a vanara who possesses the inherited skill of the divine craftsman Vishvakarma. Under his direction, the vanara army gathers trees, rocks and massive boulders to span the sea. The work is carried out with remarkable speed and cooperation. Thousands of vanaras transport immense materials from the forests and mountains while Nala organizes the construction. The bridge transforms what had seemed impossible into a practical path, allowing an entire army to march toward Lanka. Once completed, Rama, Lakshmana, Sugriva, Hanuman and the vanara host cross the ocean over Setubandha. The crossing marks the transition from preparation to invasion. For the first time, Ravana's island kingdom can be reached by land. Setubandha is remembered not as a miracle performed by one hero alone, but as a monument to collective effort guided by righteous purpose. Every stone laid upon the bridge represents determination shared across an entire army.

Origin

According to the Valmiki Ramayana, Setubandha is built after Rama seeks a way to cross the ocean to Lanka. Following the Ocean God's counsel, Nala undertakes the engineering of the bridge using his inherited knowledge from Vishvakarma, while the vanaras provide the labor. Its lasting importance comes from connecting the mainland to Lanka. Without Setubandha, Rama's army could not have reached the battlefield where the fate of the Ramayana would be decided.
