Shishupala

King of Chedi · Cousin of Krishna · Enemy of the Yadavas

Mahabharata SagaCharacter29.0

The proud king of Chedi and cousin of Lord Krishna, Shishupala was destined to meet his end at Krishna's hands after repeatedly insulting him. His arrogance culminated during Yudhishthira's Rajasuya sacrifice, where the Sudarshana Chakra fulfilled the ancient prophecy.

Biography

Shishupala appears in the Mahabharata as the king of Chedi and the son of Damaghosha and Shrutashrava, who was the sister of Vasudeva. At his birth, the child possessed extra limbs and an additional eye. A divine prophecy declared that these marks would disappear when he was placed upon the lap of the person destined to kill him. When the infant was placed in Krishna's lap, the deformities vanished, and his mother begged Krishna to spare her son. Krishna promised to forgive one hundred of Shishupala's offenses. Shishupala grew into a formidable ruler and warrior, but his resentment toward Krishna deepened over time. His hostility increased after Krishna carried away Rukmini before her proposed marriage to Shishupala. Though an accomplished king with many allies, he allowed hatred to overshadow wisdom. During Yudhishthira's Rajasuya sacrifice, Bhishma declared Krishna the most worthy recipient of the first honor. Enraged, Shishupala publicly insulted Krishna, Bhishma and the assembled kings. Krishna calmly endured the abuse until Shishupala exceeded the promised limit of forgiveness. At that moment, Krishna released the Sudarshana Chakra, which struck down the king of Chedi. The assembled rulers witnessed a brilliant radiance depart from Shishupala's body and merge into Krishna. His life became an enduring reminder that pride and relentless hostility can destroy even a mighty monarch.

Origin

According to the Mahabharata, Shishupala was born to King Damaghosha of Chedi and Shrutashrava, the sister of Vasudeva. His extraordinary birth fulfilled an ancient prophecy that the one who caused his deformities to disappear would one day end his life. The Prophecy of One Hundred Offenses shaped his destiny from infancy. Krishna promised Shishupala's mother that he would pardon one hundred insults before carrying out the prophecy.

Personality

Shishupala is remembered as bold, proud and fiercely outspoken. He possessed genuine courage and royal ability, yet his hatred of Krishna consumed his judgment. His refusal to restrain his anger ultimately fulfilled the destiny foretold at his birth.
