Shrutakirti

The Gentle Heart of Mithila

Shrutakirti

Princess of Mithila · Wife of Shatrughna

Ramayana Saga

Shrutakirti appears only briefly in the Valmiki Ramayana, yet her place among the four royal brides ties together the destinies of Mithila and Ayodhya. Her legacy is one of quiet virtue, unwavering loyalty and graceful duty.

Biography

Shrutakirti was the younger daughter of King Kushadhvaja of Mithila, the brother of King Janaka. Born into the noble house of Videha, she was raised in the same royal tradition that valued wisdom, humility and righteousness above worldly ambition. When Rama broke the bow of Shiva and won Sita's hand, King Janaka proposed that the remaining princes of Ayodhya also be joined with the daughters of his family. Shrutakirti was married to Shatrughna, the youngest son of King Dasharatha, completing the four royal marriages that united the houses of Mithila and Ayodhya. The Valmiki Ramayana offers very little direct narration about Shrutakirti after her marriage. She is neither portrayed as a warrior nor as a political figure. Instead, her presence reflects the quiet stability of the royal household during a period marked by exile, grief and restoration. Later regional traditions expand her character in different ways, but the critical tradition presents her as a virtuous queen whose greatness lies in steadfast conduct rather than dramatic action. Her silence in the epic is itself a reminder that not every guardian of dharma stands at the center of the battlefield.

Origin

Shrutakirti was born to King Kushadhvaja of the Videha dynasty. As the younger daughter of the royal house connected to King Janaka, she grew up among the noble princesses of Mithila. During the celebrated weddings in Mithila, she was given in marriage to Shatrughna, the youngest prince of Ayodhya. This alliance strengthened the bond between the kingdoms of Videha and Kosala and united all four brothers of Ayodhya with the daughters of Mithila's royal family.
