Mahabharata SagaCharacter91.0

The youngest son of Sahadeva and Draupadi, Shrutasena inherited keen intelligence and disciplined warrior training. Though young, he fought beside the Pandavas with valor and shared the tragic fate of the Upapandavas during Ashwatthama's night raid.

Biography

Shrutasena was the youngest of the five Upapandavas, the sons born to Draupadi through the five Pandava brothers. As the son of Sahadeva, the wisest and most foresighted of the Pandavas, he inherited a disciplined mind alongside the martial education expected of a Kshatriya prince. Raised in the royal household of the Pandavas, he grew up among warriors whose names had already become legends. Like his brothers, Shrutasena was trained in archery, swordsmanship and chariot warfare under the guidance of the Pandava camp. Though still young when the Kurukshetra War erupted, he fought alongside his family in defense of dharma. The epic gives only brief accounts of the Upapandavas in battle, but they are consistently presented as capable young warriors who stood with the Pandava cause. Victory at Kurukshetra did not bring peace to Shrutasena. On the night after the war had effectively ended, Ashwatthama entered the sleeping Pandava camp seeking revenge. Mistaking vengeance for justice, he slaughtered the sleeping Upapandavas along with other warriors. Shrutasena perished beside his brothers, never receiving the chance to inherit the future his parents had fought to secure. His death became one of the war's darkest moments. The fall of the Upapandavas transformed triumph into mourning, reminding both victors and survivors that even the righteous side could not escape the cost of violence. Shrutasena's memory endures as a symbol of youthful promise cut short by the final cruelty of the Mahabharata.
