Sushena

Sushena is remembered in Valmiki's Ramayana as the wise physician among the Vanaras and the father of Tara. While many heroes earned glory through strength or weapons, Sushena became indispensable through knowledge that preserved life when even the greatest warriors stood on the edge of defeat. His wisdom made him as valuable to Rama's cause as any champion on the battlefield. During the war for Lanka, Lakshmana was struck down by Indrajit's Shakti weapon and lay unconscious. At the moment when despair spread through Rama's army, Sushena calmly examined the wounded prince and determined that only specific life-restoring herbs from the Himalayas could save him. His judgment transformed panic into purpose. Sushena instructed Hanuman to bring the sacred medicinal herbs, including the Sanjeevani. Unable to identify the plants upon reaching the mountain, Hanuman carried the entire peak back to Lanka. Using the healing herbs, Sushena restored Lakshmana and many wounded Vanara warriors, allowing Rama's campaign against Ravana to continue. Although not celebrated for overwhelming martial power, Sushena remained a capable Vanara elder who stood beside his allies throughout the conflict. His leadership came through wisdom, discipline and unwavering devotion to the welfare of others rather than through conquest. Sushena's legacy proves that the fate of a war can rest in the hands of a healer. His knowledge preserved the life of Lakshmana and ensured that Rama's mission to restore dharma could reach its rightful conclusion.

Valmiki's Ramayana identifies Sushena as a respected Vanara elder and the father of Tara, who later becomes the queen of Kishkindha. He was renowned for his mastery of medicine and his trusted place among the Vanaras. His reputation as a healer reached its greatest significance during the war in Lanka, where his knowledge of sacred medicinal herbs became essential to the survival of Rama's allies.

Sushena is calm, compassionate and deeply observant. He does not panic in moments of crisis, instead relying on knowledge, experience and careful judgment. Humble despite his remarkable skill, he places the preservation of life above personal glory and serves both duty and dharma with quiet resolve.
