Ramayana SagaLocations144

Deep within the Dandaka Forest, Rama found neither battle nor kingdom. He found a sage whose welcome reminded him why the forest still sheltered dharma.

Biography

In the Valmiki Ramayana, Sutikshna Ashrama is the forest hermitage of Sage Sutikshna, a disciple of the revered Sage Agastya. During their exile, Rama, Sita and Lakshmana travel through the Dandaka Forest and visit the hermitage after meeting numerous ascetics who seek protection from rakshasa attacks. The ashrama represents one of the peaceful sanctuaries that continue to preserve sacred life amid the dangers of the wilderness. Sage Sutikshna receives Rama with warmth, reverence and simplicity. He offers the royal exiles hospitality and expresses great joy at their arrival. Rama remains at the hermitage before continuing his journey through the forest in accordance with his duty to protect the sages who dwell there. After spending time in the forests, Rama returns once more to Sutikshna Ashrama. From there, he requests directions to the hermitage of Sage Agastya. Sutikshna guides the princes toward their next destination, where Rama will receive divine weapons and further counsel before settling at Panchavati. Sutikshna Ashrama does not become famous because of war or miracles. Its importance lies in guidance. It stands between major chapters of the exile, quietly directing Rama toward the people and places that shape the remainder of the Ramayana.

Origin
